On January 10, 2007, the GCC participated in another day at the Capitol.  As details and pictures become available, they will be posted on this website.

Dem Bones

The Georgia Canine Coalition found an innovative way to get the attention of its legislators under the "gold dome" this past legislative session.  The Coalition had established a working relationship years ago with the Conservation Congress, an organization of sportsmen and landowners who are concerned with hunting and fishing in our state.  They had offered us a table when it was Conservation Congress day the the Capitol and we didn't hesitate to get our representatives supplied with something to make them remember us as the ones to come to on issues related dogs.  We purchased dog biscuits that we repackaged in individual plastic bags, sealed with a label printed as follows:

"When you think of your dog Think of Us ! ! ! ! !

GEORGIA CANINE COALITION, INC."

When the legislature adjourned for the day most of the folks working at the Capitol came by to chat and pick up a bone or two for their dogs.  Our table was set with AKC handouts, bumper stickers that stated "I OWN A DOG AND I VOTE", information on the Coalition and how to get in touch with us when the time is right for them to get a purebred puppy or a rescue dog.  After making great conversation and getting our message out, we went across the street to the Department of Agriculture.  There we presented the Commissioner with some bones for his dogs.  We also reached the secretaries in his office, the State Veterinarian and her associates as well as the Director of Animal Protection.

So often we meet with legislators to express our concerns or displeasure with a bill before them.  The Coalition's goal was to do something positive to remind those who make our laws that WE are experts when it comes to what impacts dogs and their owners.  Based on the positive feedback we got, the Coalition now knows that a little money and effort smartly spent can create a great deal of good will between you and your government officials.
